MASSA MARITTIMA: this medieval
jewel of the Alta Maremma, UNESCO heritage site, affords a
splendid view over the gulf of Follonica. The gentle hills
and the plain lead the visitor from the city down to the sea.
Well worth a visit are various attractions of naturalistic
interest like the Centro Carapax, the only centre in Italy
dedicated to the study and protection of tortoises and the
nearby Inter-provincial Park of Montioni. In the vicinity
are the "Lago dell'Accesa", a lake of karstic origin
that it is possible to bathe in, and the adjacent Archaeological
Park with the remains of an important Etruscan settlement.
MAREMMA GROSSETANA: This
is the Tuscany of the "butteri" and of free-roaming
herds. But also of porcupine and timid roe deer, of fox and
of the Mediterranean bush rich in colours and heady scents.
The landscape is characterised by the hills of the "Uccellina",
a green coastal ridge punctuated by romantic remains of ancient
watch towers and a Cistercian abbey. At their feet the Tyrrhenian
sea stretches to the west, with unspoilt beaches and a rocky
coastline - to the north lies the plain of Ombrone estuary.Follonica,
Massa Marittima, Monterotondo, Montieri, Scarlino, Castiglione
della Pescaia, Sovana, Sorano, and Pitigliano are also part
of the Maremma Grossetana.
ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY: the itineraries wind through
Etruscan settlements, Roman remains, and medieval villages
scattered over the 4,500 sq km of the province of Grosseto.
The main Etruscan settlements of Roselle, Sovana and Vetulonia
introduce the visitor to the fascinating history of this land.
Set in a breathtaking panoramic landscape overlooking the
gulf of Ansedonia, the first Roman colony of Cosa with its
exceptionally well-preserved buildings, represents a snapshot
of the social and civic organisation of the 3rd century A.D.
Numerous medieval villages (Scarlino, Suvereto, Monterotondo,
Capalbio, Roccalbegna, Montieri
) with their castles,
forts, churches and monasteries complete the picture, telling
the story of the most important aristocratic families and
of the periods of Sienese and Pisan domination.
THE SEA, NATURE, THE SPAS:
the crystal clear sea, protected parks and oases, and the
many spa centres make this land of Tuscany unique. Here you
have choice: above all the sea, bordered by extensive cliffs
carved by the wind and the sea, and soft beaches in welcoming
resorts: Punta Ala and Cala Violino (the best of the 11 most
beautiful beaches in Italy), Castiglione della Pescaia, Argentario,
the Costa d'Argento and the Costa degli Etruschi with the
spectacular Gulf of Baratti. And the islands: Elba and Giglio,
to name but the most well known. Then, there is nature - an
incredibly rich natural environment includes botanical oases,
wildlife reserves, forests and dense pinewoods, nature reserves
and parks which stretch from the mountains to the sea: from
the Wildlife Park of the Amiata to the Nature Reserve of Diaccia
Botrona, from the Regional Park of the Maremma to the Tuscan
Archipelago National Park, to mention but a few. In addition
there are the thermal springs of Saturnia, Petriolo, and Venturina,
where you can relax at the end of the day or in the course
of visits and excursions
